겁쟁이 최고경영자(CEO)는 종종 다수결이라는 피난처를 찾는다. 의사결정이 리더의 책무 중 가장 부담스럽고 외로운 일이기 때문이다. 그러나 한 명도 실망시키지 않으려고 하다가 모두를 실망시키는 어리석은 결정을 내릴 수 있다. 따라서 경영자들은 때로는 인기도 없고 지극히 비민주적인 결정을 내려야 한다는 점을 명심해야 한다. 경우에 따라서는 다수에게 불만을 주고 소수만이 만족하는 결정을 해야 할 수도 있다. 다만 그런 결정이 독선으로 오해받지 않도록, 직원들에게 자신의 행동 뒤에 숨은 신념과 정당한 목표를 이해시켜야 한다. ‘인기’라는 유혹에 빠져서 조직을 망하게 하는 의사결정을 하지 않도록 주의하자.
