Doosan Enerbility Gas Turbine
Doosan Enerbility is exporting gas turbines for the first time, supplying them to the U.S. market, known as the 'home of gas turbines.' This is considered a milestone in the history of the Korean power generation market.
Doosan Enerbility announced on the 13th that it has signed a contract to supply two gas turbines (product code DGT6-300H.S2) with a capacity of 380 megawatts (MW) to a major U.S. tech company. The plan is to supply the two gas turbines by the end of next year. The tech company in question is known to be actively engaged in the global electric vehicle market while also pursuing businesses in space, robotics, and artificial intelligence (AI). The gas turbines being supplied are expected to be used to meet the power demand of a new AI data center. The two gas turbines are the initial supply, with additional supplies reportedly being pursued. This marks a significant step for a domestic company in entering the overseas gas turbine market.
With this contract, Doosan Enerbility will achieve its first overseas gas turbine export record. The Doosan Enerbility gas turbine is the result of domestic industry-academia cooperation achieved in 2019. It became the fifth in the world to secure gas turbine technology, succeeding in the localization of large power generation gas turbines. Its performance was subsequently verified through domestic demonstration. It successfully completed a 15,000-hour demonstration at the Gimpo Combined Heat and Power Plant. Based on this, it has signed contracts to supply a total of eight gas turbines, including six domestically and two for this U.S. export. The significance of this export contract lies more in pioneering a new market than in the volume of supply. There is reportedly a high possibility of additional orders in the future.
The global big three companies in large power generation gas turbines are General Electric (GE), Siemens, and Mitsubishi Power. However, with the 'AI boom,' the power demand for data centers has surged, reaching the limits of these big three companies' order capacities. They are reportedly unable to take new orders until 2028-2029.
Data centers worldwide are finding it difficult to meet demand with existing power grids, leading them to seek independent power supply solutions. In this context, natural gas power generation gas turbines, which offer advantages in construction time, supply stability, operating period, and efficiency, are gaining attention. Unlike nuclear or coal power, which take time to start up, power generation gas turbines can quickly supply power and adjust the amount of power supplied, allowing for efficient operation.
Doosan Enerbility emphasized that its gas turbine service subsidiary based in Houston, 'DTS (Doosan Turbomachinery Service),' contributed to this order. It is noted that in the field of gas turbines, after-sales services such as maintenance and repair are as important as new supplies. Accordingly, DTS is expected to handle the maintenance services for the gas turbines supplied by Doosan Enerbility to the U.S. market.
Son Seung-woo, Head of Doosan Enerbility's Power Service BG, stated, "This contract marks a turning point for Korea, transitioning from an importer to an exporter of gas turbines," adding, "We will strictly adhere to quality and delivery schedules to repay customer trust and expand into overseas markets."
