DL E&C announced on the 19th that key executives, including CEO Park Sang-shin, met with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in Busan to discuss cooperation plans in the energy and infrastructure sectors.
President Marcos held a meeting with DL E&C during his visit to Korea for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit held in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, on the 1st.
According to DL E&C, the meeting focused on expanding cooperation in energy and infrastructure projects promoted by the Philippine government. It is reported that the Philippine government expressed a significant need for collaboration with Korean companies in the nuclear power plant construction sector, considering the rapidly increasing electricity demand and carbon neutrality goals.
DL E&C recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Meralco, the largest power company in the Philippines, to jointly explore the possibility of introducing small modular reactors (SMRs) in the country. SMRs are considered a next-generation energy source as they are about 1/100th the size of traditional large nuclear power plants, requiring no large-scale sites and can be installed near industrial complexes and other power demand locations. The industry explains that with the rapid increase in electricity demand due to the spread of artificial intelligence (AI) industries, the importance of securing carbon-free energy sources is growing.
The cooperation between DL E&C and the Philippines began in 1993 with the contract for the gas desulfurization facility construction for the Philippine National Oil Company. Since then, DL E&C has undertaken a total of 15 projects in the Philippines, securing the most construction achievements among domestic construction companies. Notably, in 2015, it completed the 'Philippines RMP-2' refinery plant commissioned by Petron, the largest refinery in the Philippines. This project, valued at approximately KRW 2.25 trillion, is considered the largest project carried out by a Korean construction company in Southeast Asia.
Park Sang-shin, CEO of DL E&C, stated, "DL E&C possesses unrivaled technology and business achievements in the energy sector," adding, "We pride ourselves as the optimal partner for the energy projects pursued by the Philippines."
