SoluM is entering the electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure market in Qatar.
SoluM’s Middle East & Africa division announced that on the 10th it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in Doha, Qatar, with local mobility company VIM Automotive for cooperation in the EV charger business. VIM Automotive is an automotive industry specialist established and operated by Qatar’s Royal Family.
The agreement was pursued as part of efforts to respond to the expansion of EV charging infrastructure in GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) countries, including Qatar. The two companies are also considering expanding the scope of cooperation from the Qatari market to major GCC countries such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The signing ceremony was attended by VIM Automotive Managing Director Saad DouKali and SoluM Middle East & Africa Energy Solution Business Development Manager Jang Yoo-jin. Officials from the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Qatar and KOTRA’s Doha Trade Center were also present.
The partnership between the two companies was concretized on the back of an EV charging infrastructure proof-of-concept (PoC) project being promoted by Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa). Kahramaa is reportedly conducting evaluations focused on charger performance, operational efficiency, and maintenance systems.
In this project, SoluM is supplying DC chargers from EV charging specialist CHAEVI and AC chargers from Motrex. The collaboration is seen as going beyond simple product supply to an effort to expand its power and mobility business base in the GCC region, leveraging local demonstration projects and network building. The verification of charger performance and maintenance systems through an actual-operation-based PoC (Proof of Concept) project is also cited as a key element in the project’s implementation.
Lee Chang-seop, Executive Director and Head of SoluM Middle East & Africa, said, “GCC countries, including Qatar, are consistently pursuing energy transition and mobility infrastructure expansion policies,” adding, “SoluM plans to broaden cooperation with local partners and gradually expand its power solution business base, including EV charging infrastructure.”
Meanwhile, SoluM is also pushing for the establishment of a joint venture (JV) with a local company in Saudi Arabia. Based on its business in Qatar, the company plans to expand its EV charging module and power solution business across the GCC region.
