회사에서 인재를 채용할 때는 강점을 가진 사람을 위주로 뽑는다. 그런 후 약점에 초점을 두고 취약점 개선을 하는데 이 과정에서 본래의 강점을 잊어버리기도 한다. 피터 드러커 교수는 “강점 위에 구축하라”는 명언을 남겼다. 그는 “강점을 잘 활용하기 위해 때로는 약점을 못 본 척 할 필요가 있다”고 강조하면서 그 예로 남북전쟁 당시 링컨의 인사 사례를 든다. 링컨은 자신이 싫어하는 유형의 사람인데도 장점을 기준으로 중책을 맡겼다. 모든 면에서 나무랄 데 없이 완벽한 사람을 찾기는 어렵다. 그러나 특정 분야에서 남다른 강점을 가진 사람은 상대적으로 찾기 쉽다. 단, 목소리 톤을 조절하듯 강점의 볼륨을 조절할 줄 아는 분별력이 함께 필요하다.
