According to the Korea Exchange, as of 9:34 a.m. on this day, Samsung Electronics' stock price recorded KRW 90,000, up KRW 4,000 (4.65%) from the previous session. This is the first time Samsung Electronics' stock price has exceeded KRW 90,000 during trading since January 15, 2021 (KRW 91,800), approximately 4 years and 8 months ago. As of 9:44 a.m., SK Hynix touched KRW 400,000, up KRW 40,000 (11.11%) from the previous session. The semiconductor 'two tops,' Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, have both set new 52-week highs.
This is interpreted as a boost in investment sentiment following the strategic partnership both companies formed with OpenAI. The previous day, Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong and SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won met with CEO Altman and signed a letter of intent (LOI) for cooperation. The agreement includes supplying advanced semiconductors such as high-bandwidth memory (HBM) produced by the two companies to AI data centers (DC) in the U.S., which OpenAI, along with Oracle and Japan's SoftBank, plans to invest $500 billion (approximately KRW 700 trillion) in building by 2029.
Meanwhile, due to the stock price increase, Chairman Lee's stock value surpassed KRW 20 trillion. This comes about two weeks after it exceeded KRW 19 trillion on the 16th of last month. The highest ever domestic stock valuation was KRW 22 trillion, set by the late Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee.
