C&Y Engineering (Chairman Yoon Ho-jin), a structural design specialist headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, United States, has established a Korea branch in Seoul and will support domestic companies’ entry into the North American market.
C&Y Engineering is a company that has carried out structural design, permitting, and project/construction management (PM·CM) primarily for advanced industrial facilities such as semiconductors, batteries, automobiles, tires, and bio-related plants. It holds licenses in 40 U.S. states and, according to the company, has participated in building North American production bases for major Korean companies such as SK On and Kia, handling structural design and permitting responses.
The company held a ceremony on the 17th at the Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, to commemorate the establishment of its Korea branch. The event was attended by more than 50 representatives from industry and academia, including Park Jin-chul, President of the Architectural Institute of Korea; Park Hong-geun, President of the Korea Institute of Protective Structures; Choi Sang-hyun, President of the Korean Society of Steel Construction; Han Man-hee, President of the International Contractors Association of Korea; Kim Chang-hak, President of the Korea Plant Industries Association; and Kim Gyu-yong, President of the Korea Institute of Building Construction.
C&Y Engineering cited differences in construction systems between Korea and the United States as the rationale for establishing the Korea branch. While the United States operates an Engineer of Record (EOR) system in which a licensed professional engineer assumes responsibility for the overall design, Korea is relatively more accustomed to a structure that allows flexible responses at construction sites. Accordingly, the company views it as important to deepen understanding of the structural design and permitting framework from the initial stage of entering the U.S. market.
The Korea branch plans to provide practical support that Korean companies require in the process of entering the U.S. market, including structural design for cost estimation from the investment review stage and detailed drawing design for permitting responses.
Kim Do-hyung, CEO of C&Y Engineering Korea, stated, “The Korea branch will not simply serve as a contact window, but will be a base where customers can tangibly experience practical support,” adding, “Based on our field experience, we will jointly propose the necessary direction starting from the investment review stage.”
Kim Young-min, Senior Advisor at C&Y Engineering Korea, said, “Companies entering the United States must review a wide range of factors including not only permits, but also land, finance, and taxation,” and added, “For materials, components, equipment, and vendor companies for which early response is critical, this can help reduce trial and error.”
