HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ HiMSEN engine for land-based power generation.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries announced on the 22nd that it has signed a contract with U.S. energy infrastructure developer Aperion Energy Group for the supply of 20MW-class power generation facilities based on its HiMSEN engines. The contract covers a total capacity of 684 megawatts (MW), with a value of KRW 627.1 billion, marking the largest-ever power generation engine contract for the company.
The contracted equipment is scheduled to be used for power infrastructure at data centers in the United States. As power demand at data centers rises sharply due to the spread of generative AI and increased cloud investment, securing facilities capable of providing stable, large-scale power supply has emerged as a key task.
The 20MW-class HiMSEN engines to be supplied under this contract are large-capacity medium-speed engines characterized by high output and high efficiency, rapid start-up, and stable load response capabilities. They are regarded as suitable facilities for data center environments that require 24-hour, non-stop operation.
The contract is also significant in that HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has expanded its business scope from its traditional focus on shipbuilding and offshore to the power generation and land-based power infrastructure sectors. In particular, as this marks its first entry into the U.S. data center market, it is expected to serve as a bridgehead for targeting the North American power market going forward.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), U.S. power demand is expected to continue increasing through 2030, with a substantial share of the incremental demand attributed to data center expansion.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries plans to expand application fields centered on the HiMSEN engine to data centers, industrial power, and emergency and backup power.
Han Ju-seok, Head of the Engine & Machinery Business, said, “This contract is an important starting point for entry into the U.S. data center market,” adding, “The company will strengthen its presence in the North American market and expand opportunities in various power generation businesses.”
