LG Energy Solution announced on the 27th that it has signed a strategic memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Israeli renewable energy company Energix Renewable Energies to expand energy storage system (ESS) supply in Europe and North America. The plan is to expand the partnership it has built in Poland to Lithuania and the North American region.
Under the agreement, the two companies will cooperate with the goal of supplying a total of 2GWh of ESS within the next 24 months, including 1.5GWh in Europe and 0.5GWh in North America. They also plan to review measures to increase the total supply volume to 4.5GWh through local subsidiaries in Europe and the United States.
Energix is an independent power producer (IPP) headquartered in Israel that develops and operates solar, wind, and ESS projects in Europe, North America, and Israel. It has set a goal of expanding its global renewable energy business portfolio to more than 8GW.
The first project for which the two companies will cooperate is the Jonava project in Lithuania. Energix is developing an integrated renewable energy project there that combines solar and wind power generation with ESS. The ESS covered by this collaboration is about 320MWh, with commercial operation targeted for 2027.
The companies previously established a partnership through product supply in the Nowe Czarnowo ESS project in Poland in 2024.
According to business materials disclosed by Energix, the Nowe Czarnowo ESS consists of a 48MWh first phase and a 52MWh second phase. The total storage capacity is 100MWh, and the second-phase facilities have been pursued with a target start of operations in 2026.
LG Energy Solution is also expanding ESS supply by leveraging its local production facilities in Europe. At its Wrocław plant in Poland, it produces lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries for ESS and supplies them to local power grid projects.
A representative project is the Żarnowiec ESS project of Polish state-owned power company PGE. The project has been pursued with an output of 262MW and a storage capacity of 981MWh, and LG Energy Solution supplied an ESS system based on LFP batteries produced in Poland.
In North America, the company is also increasing its supply capacity by converting electric-vehicle battery production facilities for ESS use. LG Energy Solution began operating ESS production lines between May and June this year at its two joint plants with GM in the United States and at its joint plant with Honda, and has announced a plan to secure more than 50GWh of ESS production capacity in North America by the end of the year.
In the first half of this year, the company secured more than KRW 3 trillion in new ESS orders, including for AI data center projects. It plans to respond to demand for grid and renewable energy-linked ESS while expanding its customer base in Europe.
Kang Chang-bum, Executive Vice President and Head of the ESS Battery Division at LG Energy Solution, said, “Through cooperation with Energix, LG Energy Solution has been able to expand ESS business opportunities in Europe and North America and further strengthen its global customer base,” adding, “Based on differentiated technological capabilities and local production capacity, the company will accelerate the growth of its global ESS business.”
