Results of a joint industry-academic study on scalp health improvement and androgenetic alopecia treatment using RF microporation-based technology have been published in the international journal “Pharmaceutics.”
On the 14th, global beauty company APR Co., Ltd. (CEO Kim Byung-hoon) announced that research findings on hair loss treatment using its proprietary beauty device core technology were published in Pharmaceutics on August 28.
RF microporation is a technology that uses precisely controlled radiofrequency energy to create temporary microchannels in the scalp’s stratum corneum. It works by helping active ingredients applied to the scalp penetrate more effectively into the skin and around hair follicles.
In this preclinical study, combined application of RF microporation and minoxidil increased the amount of minoxidil remaining in the epidermis and dermis by up to 2.4 times compared with topical application of minoxidil alone.
In experiments using an androgenetic alopecia animal model, hair coverage, length, and thickness also showed significant improvement.
This technology focuses on overcoming delivery limitations associated with conventional topical hair loss treatments.
Oral finasteride, which is widely used for male pattern hair loss, cannot be administered to women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. Consequently, topical minoxidil applied directly to the scalp is used as a representative pharmacologic treatment for female pattern hair loss.
However, topical agents such as minoxidil must pass through the outermost stratum corneum of the scalp, which makes it difficult to deliver sufficient active ingredients to the skin and around the hair follicles. Effective delivery of active ingredients to the actual site of action has therefore long been regarded as a key area for improvement.
APR expects that RF microporation can be expanded into a platform technology that enhances absorption not only of minoxidil but also of various other active ingredients for scalp and hair. The company noted that it can be applied in multiple areas, including improvement of the scalp environment, promotion of hair health, and adjuvant therapy for hair loss.
APR plans to verify the applicability, efficacy, and safety of this technology in the field of hair loss treatment through further clinical studies.
