Daewoo Engineering & Construction (Daewoo E&C) announced on the 1st that it has developed a “real-time AI translator specialized for construction sites” for foreign workers. The system was introduced to eliminate language barriers on sites amid the rising share of foreign workers and to enhance the efficiency of safety management.
The AI translator was developed under the leadership of Daewoo E&C in collaboration with Lotte Innovate. Based on Lotte Innovate’s real-time AI voice translation technology, Daewoo E&C implemented a system optimized for construction site environments and applied a “construction-specialized terminology dictionary” that reflects jargon and technical terms frequently used on sites to improve translation accuracy.
In particular, the system allows for the immediate registration and modification of newly used terms or frequently utilized expressions on site, enabling customized operation for each site.
The AI translator supports up to 180 languages and applies real-time voice processing technology to minimize translation latency. Daewoo E&C stated that this is expected to reduce information omissions and delivery errors that may occur during conventional interpretation processes and to improve communication efficiency between managers and foreign workers.
Daewoo E&C is currently verifying the effectiveness of the system at the Sewoon 633 office project, a smart safety technology pilot site, and at the construction site of the Gwacheon G-TOWN development project.
The operation method also takes on-site usability into account. When a site manager opens a translation channel, workers can check translated content in real time on their personal smartphones during morning briefings and safety meetings such as TBM (Tool Box Meeting). The company expects this to improve workers’ understanding of work instructions, reinforce the effectiveness of safety training, and contribute to accident prevention.
As the chair company of the Smart Construction Alliance led by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Daewoo E&C is expanding the adoption of AI-based smart construction technologies. The company is also promoting various digital transformation projects, including its in-house AI contract document analysis system “Baro-Dab AI,” communication solution “Baro-Letter AI,” and AI-based landscape design technology.
A Daewoo E&C representative stated, “The real-time AI translator is more than a simple language translation tool; it is a communication infrastructure for securing the safety of on-site workers and improving construction quality,” adding, “Daewoo E&C will continue to expand the application of diverse smart safety technologies on sites and take the lead in building a safe, digitally based construction ecosystem.”
