KCC Glass announced on the 6th that it will launch 'SAVIRDS,' a glass product with bird collision prevention features, for the first time in Korea.

SAVIRDS is a product that uses a special 'Sand Blasting' technique to engrave patterns on the glass surface to prevent bird collisions. Circular patterns, 8mm in size, are engraved at intervals of 5cm horizontally and vertically, making birds perceive them as obstacles they cannot pass through, thus preventing collisions.

In fact, SAVIRDS met the requirements above the standards in tests conducted by the American Bird Conservancy (ABC) and became the first domestic glass product to be certified by the association for its bird collision reduction effect.

KCC Glass released this product in response to the growing severity of wildlife bird damage caused by glass and the strengthening of related regulations. The aim is to address the demand for biodiversity conservation and eco-friendly construction. According to a report submitted by the National Institute of Ecology to the Ministry of Environment in 2019, approximately 8 million birds die annually in Korea due to collisions with building glass and soundproof walls. In response, the government amended the 'Wildlife Protection and Management Act' in 2022, mandating wildlife damage reduction measures in public institution buildings.

Currently, attaching bird collision prevention films or stickers to glass is common. However, due to limitations in durability, such as discoloration or detachment caused by external factors like ultraviolet rays, their effectiveness is consistently questioned.

In contrast, SAVIRDS can maintain its pattern semi-permanently by engraving it directly onto the glass. It can also be cut and processed like regular glass without restrictions. Particularly, a Low-E coating (a silver coating to enhance the thermal insulation performance of glass) is applied to the opposite side of the patterned surface, ensuring high thermal insulation performance and effectively reducing energy consumption in buildings.

KCC Glass plans to actively promote the strengths of SAVIRDS and gradually expand its application range from public institution buildings to general buildings. A KCC Glass representative stated, "SAVIRDS is an ESG glass product based on technology to respond to biodiversity conservation and eco-friendly construction demand," adding, "As a leading company in the domestic glass industry, we will promote product commercialization and simultaneously enhance consumer awareness of wildlife bird protection."

Meanwhile, KCC Glass is also operating a biodiversity conservation campaign 'Save Birds KCC Glass' to protect wildlife birds. Through this, they are attaching bird collision prevention stickers to buildings with general glass installations that pose a high risk of bird collisions, in collaboration with the National Institute of Ecology, and conducting talk concerts to raise awareness about the importance of wildlife bird protection.
