HD Hyundai Robotics will invest KRW 13.0 billion in AIDIN Robotics, a company specializing in robotic sensory functions. The company plans to secure sensor technology that detects force and tactile sensations and utilize it for the development of humanoid robots and automation solutions for shipbuilding and heavy industries.
HD Hyundai Robotics announced on the 11th that it had acquired a stake in AIDIN Robotics through an investment of KRW 13.0 billion.
AIDIN Robotics develops sensor technology that enables robots to detect force and tactile sensations. It independently designs and manufactures force and tactile sensors based on capacitive measurement methods. This technology is used to identify the force applied to objects and their contact status, and is applied to robot parts requiring high precision, such as the hands of humanoid robots.
Through this investment, HD Hyundai Robotics plans to apply AIDIN Robotics’ force and tactile sensors and control technology to its own robot platforms. The two companies will also jointly develop a five-finger robot hand specialized for shipbuilding and heavy industry worksites and mount it on HD Hyundai Robotics’ humanoid robots.
The companies will also cooperate in surface treatment automation projects in shipbuilding and heavy industry. They will jointly develop automation solutions that replace manual polishing and grinding work with robots.
They plan to first apply these solutions to shipbuilding and heavy industry sites, then expand the business scope to domestic manufacturing, and ultimately enter overseas manufacturing markets, including U.S. shipyards.
HD Hyundai Robotics explained that it decided on this investment to strengthen “physical AI” technology, which enables robots to perceive and move in real-world environments. The company intends to combine force and tactile sensing technology with existing industrial robots to improve work precision and to expand the application of this technology to its future humanoid robot business.
A representative of AIDIN Robotics said, “Through collaboration between the two companies, we plan to jointly develop next-generation robot solutions that can be used in actual industrial sites and to expand technology applications and business opportunities across various industries in Korea and overseas.”
A representative of HD Hyundai Robotics said, “This investment is a strategic choice to develop physical AI-based robot solutions by combining the capabilities of both companies,” adding, “We will continue to expand strategic cooperation with promising technology companies.”
