AST Holdings Co., Ltd. (AST) will participate in building the digital twin ecosystem of “Alatau City,” the largest new city in Kazakhstan.

AST announced on the 10th that on the 9th it signed an MOU for the establishment and development of a digital twin ecosystem for Alatau City with the Alatau City Authorities (ACA) and Ilju G&S, on the occasion of the “World Smart City Expo” held in Busan. This agreement is expected to serve as an important milestone in strengthening cooperation in advanced technology between the two countries.

Alatau City, which is being developed north of Almaty, is the largest smart city in Central Asia, promoted by the Kazakhstani government as a new industrial and business hub. From the initial stage, it has been developed with the integration of digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI), with the goal of becoming a global business, technology, and financial hub.

Under this agreement, AST plans to use geographic information system (GIS), building information modelling (BIM), and extended reality (XR)-based technologies to integrate Alatau City’s urban data and Internet of Things (IoT) information into a 3D platform. The parties will jointly promote ▲ linkage of IoT and urban infrastructure ▲ construction of 3D spatial information visualization and simulation models ▲ development of predictive analytics tools ▲ design of proof-of-concept (PoC) technologies for the city ▲ platform construction and operation.

Over time, services will be expanded in phases to cover transportation, environment, safety, facility management, as well as urban planning, construction, utilities, and autonomous mobility. To extend capabilities to data analytics and decision-making support linked with AI, a joint working-level team from the three institutions will begin detailing the technical scope of the PoC and the target areas.

AST has been expanding global digital transformation projects, including in Saudi Arabia, while its partner Ilju G&S is a specialized company that has applied AI and digital twin-based solutions in urban safety and utility management. ACA plans to strengthen a strategic approach centered on joint engineering, data localization, and real-environment verification, going beyond simple solution procurement.

Lee Dong-woo, CEO of AST, stated, “Alatau City is a project that designs digital technologies and operating systems together from the stage when the city itself is being created,” adding, “Based on the experience accumulated so far, we will implement a platform that provides practical support for city operations and demonstrate the potential of Korean smart city technologies in the Central Asian market.”
