LG Electronics has successfully become the first to supply next-generation 5G smart telematics (in-vehicle entertainment and communication technology) solutions to a European finished vehicle manufacturer.

LG Electronics announced on the 19th that it has recently applied its telematics solution based on R16, the latest 5G communication standard, for the first time to a mass-produced model from a European automaker. This is the first time that an R16-based telematics solution has been applied to mass-produced vehicles in Europe.

Compared with the immediately preceding communication standard R15, R16 enhances data transmission reliability and reduces latency. The data error rate has been improved to 0.001%, and the data transmission latency between the telematics module and the base station has been reduced to 0.001 seconds, representing improvements of 100 times and 5 times over 4G, respectively.

Based on this performance, it provides a communication environment suitable for next-generation vehicle services such as OTA (Over-the-Air) updates for wirelessly updating vehicle software, V2X, which supports real-time information exchange between vehicles and objects/infrastructure, and large-volume data transmission required for autonomous driving systems.

Design has also been significantly improved, not just performance. The communication module and up to 12 antennas are integrated into a single hardware unit, minimizing signal loss between components and simplifying wiring structures and spatial layout. Through this, automakers can reduce installation space and cost burdens within the vehicle, and eliminate protruding external antennas to achieve a sleek exterior design.

The supply is highly significant given that telematics solutions are a core infrastructure in the era of SDV (Software-Defined Vehicle) and AIDV (Artificial Intelligence-Defined Vehicle). Eun Seok-hyun, head of LG Electronics’ VS Business Division, said, “By continuously innovating in the field of in-vehicle communications, which has become a key competitive edge in mobility, LG Electronics will firmly secure telematics market leadership in the SDV and AIDV era.”
