LG Electronics has become the first Korean company to obtain a quality certification from NVIDIA, a leading artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductor manufacturer, for liquid cooling facilities used in AI data centers.

On the 27th, LG Electronics announced that it had received NVIDIA’s final certification for its 600-kilowatt (kW) “coolant distribution unit (CDU).” This unit is a core facility that circulates cold water inside servers to directly dissipate heat. It is assessed as effectively controlling the heat generated by high-performance AI semiconductors, which is difficult to manage with conventional methods that cool spaces using cold air. During the certification process, LG Electronics’ product demonstrated precise temperature control capability within a margin of error of 0.25 degrees. In particular, it received high marks for its uninterrupted operation performance, whereby cooling does not stop because the system switches immediately to backup equipment even if some units malfunction.

In a market where NVIDIA equipment is used as the standard, this certification is expected to serve as a springboard for large-scale orders. This is because it can significantly reduce the technology verification period that global customers typically carry out on their own.

LG Electronics plans to expand certification to high-capacity products of 1 megawatt (MW) or higher in the future. In addition, the company intends to target the global market with an integrated solution that encompasses the entire data center thermal management process—from large chillers that produce and supply cold water in bulk, to metal cold plates that are attached directly to semiconductors to draw away heat.
