Daewoo E&C has moved to expand its future business by proposing to the Indonesian government and key institutions a converged development model that integrates small modular reactors (SMRs), liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure, and AI data centers. The company plans to foster Indonesia as a core strategic market following Vietnam.
Daewoo E&C stated on the 13th that Chairman Chung Won-ju visited Jakarta, Indonesia, from July 7 to 11 and met with government and political figures, sovereign wealth fund officials, and local developers to discuss cooperation plans for future businesses such as energy infrastructure, AI data centers, and new town development.
During this visit, Chairman Chung held talks on cooperation plans with Sugeng Suparwoto, Chairman of the 12th Commission of the Indonesian House of Representatives; Todotua Pasaribu, Vice Minister of Investment and Downstream Industry; Pandu Sjahrir, Chief Investment Officer (CIO) of Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund Danantara; and representatives of the Korindo Group, among others.
In meetings with government officials, Daewoo E&C proposed an “all-in-one converged development” model that simultaneously builds LNG plants and terminals, power plants, SMRs, and gigawatt (GW)-scale AI data centers. The company explained that, based on its experience in constructing LNG plants and energy infrastructure, this is a development approach that supplies both the power and infrastructure required to build the foundation of the AI industry.
The Indonesian government is reported to have expressed its willingness to provide support for the promotion of related projects.
In talks with sovereign wealth fund Danantara, the two sides also discussed ways to expand cooperation in new town development and investment and development projects. They agreed to share potential areas of collaboration in the course of pursuing large-scale development projects and to continue identifying follow-up opportunities.
Indonesia, along with Vietnam, is a country that Daewoo E&C is cultivating as a key overseas strategic market. Since entering the local market in 1986, Daewoo E&C has carried out a total of seven projects worth USD 540 million (approximately KRW 811.9 billion) in the building and plant sectors, including a kraft paper mill, District 8, and the Tangguh LNG expansion project.
Last year, Chairman Chung paid a courtesy visit to President Prabowo Subianto to convey the company’s intention to expand its business, and in April this year, on the occasion of President Prabowo’s visit to Korea, Daewoo E&C signed a business agreement for the development of BSD New Town with Sinar Mas Land and the Korea Overseas Infrastructure & Urban Development Corporation (KIND).
Daewoo E&C plans to expand energy and infrastructure projects and real estate development in Indonesia by linking SMRs, LNG plants, and AI data centers. Based on its experience in developing Vietnam’s Star Lake City, the company also intends to establish a business model that encompasses both investment and development.
A Daewoo E&C official said, “Indonesia is a core strategic market with abundant growth potential,” adding, “We will expand cooperation in various sectors, including energy infrastructure, AI data centers, and real estate development.”
