Cheongju in North Chungcheong Province will host the nation’s first artificial intelligence (AI)-based smart recreation forest. According to Cheongju City on the 9th, Miwon Byeolbit Natural Recreation Forest has been selected for the “2026 Large-Scale Convergence Robot Demonstration Project – Public Experience-Oriented Demonstration Type,” overseen by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Institute for Robot Industry Advancement. The city plans to invest KRW 1.98 billion by November next year to build an AI-based smart recreation forest model. The project is led by the Chungbuk Institute of Science and Technology Innovation, with Cheongju City, KT Corp., SK Intellix and TYM Corp. forming a consortium to implement it.

Through this project, Cheongju City plans to enhance visitor safety and convenience and provide differentiated experiential services. It also aims to establish the nation’s first recreation forest operating AI-based multi-type service robots, presenting a smart forest tourism model that can be replicated nationwide. The project will be carried out in two phases. First, patrol and safety management robots, experiential service robots, environmental management robots, and an integrated control system will be established. Subsequently, outdoor autonomous delivery robots and multipurpose service robots will be introduced, and the integrated control system will be upgraded. A total of five types and eight units of AI-based service robots will provide various services throughout the recreation forest.

The service robots introduced under this project will use AI technology in a wide range of areas, including safety and facility management, experiential services and goods delivery. In addition, the integrated control system will be built as an intelligent management framework that manages robot operations in real time and reflects comprehensive analysis of robot operation data and facility usage data in operational planning.
