LS Cable & System is moving in earnest to commercialize a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) submarine cable with the highest transmission capacity in Korea. The company is accelerating its strategy to target the “West Coast Energy Expressway” project, which is being pursued for completion by 2030.

LS Cable & System announced on the 9th that, for the first time in Korea, its 525 kV, 80℃-class HVDC submarine cable has passed the PQ (Pre-Qualification, performance qualification) test. By passing this PQ test, LS Cable & System has established a foundation for supplying 525 kV, 80℃-class submarine cables applicable to the West Coast Energy Expressway project. This product raises the permissible conductor temperature from the existing 70℃ to 80℃, increasing transmission capacity by more than 25%. It is a next-generation submarine cable suitable for long-distance and large-capacity power transmission.

The recent surge in AI data centers is driving increased demand for long-distance, large-capacity transmission networks. LS Cable & System has the country’s only commercial track record in this field, having supplied HVDC cables for the approximately 90 km “Jeju 2·3 Interconnection Project” linking Wando in South Jeolla Province and Jeju Island, as well as for Europe’s TenneT project.

The company stated, “Passing this PQ test is an important milestone in targeting the next-generation national power grid market,” adding, “We will further strengthen our efforts to capture the Energy Expressway and the global HVDC market.”
