The glass wall of a conference room turns opaque at the touch of a button. In hospital examination rooms, external views can be blocked without separate curtains, and in hotel rooms, the ambience can be changed without blinds. It can also be used in secure conference or consultation spaces. Pressing the button again returns the glass to a transparent window.

Vsion, headquartered at the Daegu Scale-Up Hub in Dong-gu, Daegu, is a company that manufactures such “smart windows.” The head office is in Daegu, research and development (R&D) is conducted in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, and production takes place at its plant in Jeungpyeong, North Chungcheong Province. This technology company, which started in Daegu, is now taking on the global smart window market beyond the domestic arena.

Established in 2022, Vsion develops special films that freely control the transparency and color of glass through electricity. It is not simply a window manufacturer, but a company that researches technologies to reduce building energy consumption and make living spaces more convenient. The company name, Vsion, combines “View” and “Vision,” reflecting its aim to create new perspectives, experiences, and history through smart windows.

Its flagship product, the smart window, can be used in conference rooms, hospitals, hotels, and commercial facilities. It makes the glass opaque only when needed to block external views, and it blocks strong sunlight and heat to reduce cooling energy. According to the company, applying the product can reduce cooling energy consumption by up to 50–62%.

Its technological competitiveness has also been recognized. Vsion developed the world’s first smart window technology capable of implementing various colors and was selected for TIPS, a technology startup support program of the Ministry of SMEs and Startups. It subsequently attracted a cumulative KRW 7 billion in Series A funding (the first large-scale investment for business expansion), and this year it was included in the government’s “Super-Gap Startup 1000+” initiative.

The company is also delivering results in overseas markets. It has supplied products to “Station F,” a startup campus in Paris, France, as well as to the Parliament House of Thailand and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Luxembourg. Recently, it has been conducting technology validation with a European automotive glass manufacturer in preparation for entry into the automotive smart window market.

The company is steadily expanding its production base. At its production facility of about 5,000㎡ established in Jeungpyeong, North Chungcheong Province, Vsion is mass-producing smart film and has built a system capable of handling everything from R&D to production and installation in-house. Its eco-friendly technological capabilities have been recognized with Green Technology Certification and Green Technology Product Verification from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

The company also has ambitions to enter the future mobility market beyond the construction sector. It expects the application of smart windows to expand to electric vehicles, railways, and aircraft, and is accelerating related technology development. Executive Director of Brand Marketing Yeom Hye-ji said, “As interest in energy saving and eco-friendly building grows, the smart window market is also expanding rapidly,” adding, “Building on the technological capabilities developed in Daegu, we will grow into a global smart glazing company encompassing both construction and mobility.”
