LG Electronics’ industrial heat pump product
LG Electronics has recently supplied an innovative industrial heat pump in Korea with enhanced temperature and capacity performance.
LG Electronics announced on the 8th that it has completed the supply of an industrial large-capacity (1,000 refrigeration ton (RT)-class) wide-temperature-difference (temperature difference of 70°C or more between high and low temperature, high-temperature supply of 108°C or higher) heat pump system to Ajin P&P, a paper manufacturing company based in Daegu, and that full-scale operation began in early July.
This project is a national strategic task under a state research and development program overseen by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy to achieve “2050 Carbon Neutrality (Net Zero).” It is a large-scale project that has been promoted since 2023 by a consortium of 15 entities from industry, academia, and research institutes (including LG Electronics).
The newly supplied product is an innovative model that has raised the outlet water temperature of conventional industrial heat pumps from around 90°C to 108°C (up to a maximum of 118°C), while realizing a large capacity of up to 1,040 RT. High-temperature water from industrial heat pumps exceeding 100°C is used in a variety of industrial sites, including paper mills where drying is essential for paper production, product sterilization processes in food plants, as well as chemical and refining facilities.
Adopting LG Electronics’ industrial heat pump is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions and energy costs. This is because the product improves energy efficiency by using electric energy and waste heat recovery instead of fossil fuel combustion. In addition, LG Electronics’ proprietary “large-capacity oil-free magnetic bearing” technology has been applied, freeing the system from constraints related to lubricant supply and simultaneously achieving cost savings in maintenance and electricity charges. As the core medium for heat transfer, it uses R-1233zd refrigerant, which has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of just 1.
LG Electronics is expanding its industrial heat pump business both domestically and overseas. In 2024, it supplied an industrial water-source heat pump to COEX (Korea World Trade Center), and in 2025 it supplied an industrial heat pump for district heating to Ørsted, a Danish energy company. The company is currently pursuing active order-taking activities at industrial sites in North America and Europe, including the United States, Canada, Norway, and Finland.
Lee Jae-sung, head of the ES Business Division at LG Electronics, said, “In the heat pump sector, which is fundamentally transforming how heating, cooling, and thermal energy are utilized not only in residential spaces and commercial facilities but also in industrial sites, we will strengthen our penetration of global markets with differentiated core components and technological capabilities.”
According to global market research firm MarketsandMarkets, the global industrial heat pump market is expected to grow to USD 4.8 billion (approximately KRW 6.5 trillion) by 2026. Some reports project that the industrial heat pump market will grow at a compound annual rate of 6.9% through 2035.
