LG Electronics, which has formed an alliance with NVIDIA in the next-generation robotics sector, has established a Robotics Business Center under the direct control of the CEO and appointed key executives, accelerating the commercialization of physical artificial intelligence (AI). The strategy is to firmly secure its position in the supply chain of the physical AI sector, which is emerging as a next-generation growth engine.

According to the business community on the 7th, LG Electronics on May 30 appointed Park Ki-beom, head of the LG CNS IT Research Institute, as head of the robot learning data factory under the newly created CEO-direct Robotics Business Center. For robots and other physical AI to be applied in actual production and services, learning from “on-site data” is essential, but the volume of data for physical AI remains critically insufficient. The industry assesses that the volume of data usable by physical AI is at about 1% of the training data used for large language models (LLMs) developed by OpenAI, Google, and others. The data factory is an organization established to secure data in the severely undersupplied physical AI field. The judgment is that the future competitiveness of physical AI will ultimately depend on who can accumulate high-quality data more quickly.

Park, the newly appointed head, is an expert at LG CNS with broad experience in new technology research and development, future business exploration, and commercialization, and has led major LG CNS businesses such as manufacturing and engineering solutions and smart software development. The data factory organization Park will lead is scheduled to be located at the humanoid learning data factory to be set up at LG Electronics’ Yangjae R&D Campus in Seocho-gu, Seoul. At this site, the focus will be on collecting real-world data for various robots, centered on LG Electronics’ home robot “Cloi.”

The data factory, which is scheduled to begin operation within the year, will have three above-ground floors with a total area of 6,400 pyeong (about 20,000㎡). LG Electronics will be the first in Korea to build a data factory of this scale. In China, robotics company Agile Robots has established a data collection “super factory” of about 4,000㎡ in Shanghai.

LG Electronics plans to concentrate the capabilities of all its affiliates in the Robotics Business Center, including the data factory organization, in order to capture both the “brains” of robots and robot hardware. In AI, LG AI Research has secured the LLM model “EXAONE,” while in hardware it has acquired actuator technology used in robot joints.
