Synopex will invest around KRW 15 billion (USD 10 million) in facilities to expand production of flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) modules for electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The investment is intended to respond to mass production of new EV models by global customers and to scale up its EV FPCB business into a full-scale mass production phase.
The investment will be carried out in two stages at the Yen Phong plant in Vietnam. In the first stage, about USD 8 million will be invested to establish core production equipment and mass-production lines. In the second stage, an additional USD 2 million will be invested to increase production capacity and efficiency. Synopex plans to use this to respond to rising mass-production demand from 2027.
FPCB (flexible printed circuit board) is a thin, flexible circuit board that transmits electrical signals and is a key component that connects EV battery cells and delivers power. As EV battery capacity has recently increased, longer and more precise FPCBs are required. The longer the FPCB, the higher the production difficulty and quality control requirements.
Through this investment, Synopex will build an FPCB module production line with a length of 2.2 meters, the largest in Korea, following its existing 1.5-meter production line. Instead of connecting multiple boards as before, major components such as semiconductors are precisely mounted on a single long circuit board. The company explained that this approach reduces connection points and improves space utilization, power transmission efficiency, and product reliability.
The company has been preparing the EV FPCB business as a future growth driver since designating it as such in 2022. It completed the Yen Phong plant in Vietnam in 2024, obtained the international automotive quality certification IATF 16949, and recently completed mass-production quality verification with a global customer.
Choi Sang-eon, Executive Vice President of Synopex, said, “We recently passed the customer’s production line mass-production verification, and with this facilities investment, we have expanded our business from supplying FPCB modules for smartphones to supplying large FPCB modules for electric vehicles,” adding, “This will serve as a turning point for the EV FPCB business, which has been promoted over the past four years, to move beyond the development stage and into a full-scale mass-production supply phase.”
He added, “Based on the technological capabilities accumulated in the smartphone sector and our acquisition of 2.2-meter production technology, which is at the top level in Korea, we will strengthen our penetration of the EV market.”
Synopex plans to leverage the technology it has secured in EV battery FPCB modules to expand its business into high value-added markets such as data centers, energy storage systems (ESS), and defense.
