LG Electronics has carried out a one-point organizational reshuffle to create a “Robotics Business Center” reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This move is seen as a strategic decision to foster a physical artificial intelligence (AI)-based robotics business as a key future growth engine.

On the 30th, LG Electronics announced that it had established the Robotics Business Center effective July 1. This is an unusual measure taken four months ahead of the regular year-end reorganization. Song Si-yong, who has served as head of the Smart Factory Solution Center, has been appointed as the new head of the center. The newly created organization will be structured as a fully integrated unit encompassing business development, sales, and operations functions. In addition, a dedicated “data factory” department for robot learning has been placed under the center.

Roles have also been divided. The newly established center will take direct charge of the home robot segment, while the industrial and commercial robot segments will be driven mainly by subsidiaries Robostar and Bear Robotics, with plans to generate synergy. In addition, the company intends to enhance execution capabilities through a collaborative system that combines the capabilities of affiliates such as LG CNS and LG AI Research Institute, as well as through global partnerships.

It is also pursuing infrastructure expansion and internalization of core components. Within this year, the company plans to complete the construction of a large-scale data factory for robot learning at the Yangjae R&D Campus in Seocho-gu, Seoul, and to both manufacture domestically and supply externally actuators, the core drive components, based on its own technology.
