POSCO Group on the 17th held back-to-back completion ceremonies in Gwangyang, South Jeolla Province, for an electric furnace designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and for its rare gas plant “POSCO Air Solution.”

At Gwangyang Steelworks that day, POSCO held a completion ceremony for a large-scale electric furnace with an annual capacity of 2.5 million tons and declared a full-fledged transition to a greenhouse gas reduction production system. Construction of the electric furnace began in February 2024, with an investment of about KRW 600 billion, and the facility is capable of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 75%. POSCO has set a target to carry out additional research and development on electric furnace technology and to mass-produce automotive steel sheets and electrical steel sheets using electric furnaces by 2030.

POSCO Group also held a completion ceremony on the same day for “POSCO Air Solution,” a high-purity rare gas production plant located within the Gwangyang Steelworks site. The plant extracts rare gases such as xenon, krypton and neon at high purity. At the ceremony, POSCO Group Chairman Chang In-hwa urged, “Let us address the era-defining task of decarbonization and solidify our status as a leading company in future materials,” and stressed, “We must also become a pillar that protects Korea’s supply chain security by producing essential materials for advanced industries with our own technology.”
