Hyosung has fully entered the data center business, a core infrastructure in the AI era, by opening a data center in Seoul with a power capacity of 30MW.

Hyosung announced on the 17th that it will officially launch its data center business by opening the “STT Seoul 1” data center in Gasan-dong, Geumcheon-gu, Seoul, through “Hyosung-STT GDC,” a joint venture established together with STT GDC, a European data center operating company.

The company explained that “STT Seoul 1” is a facility that combines Hyosung Heavy Industries’ capabilities in power supply systems with STT GDC’s expertise in data center design, operation, and services. While most corporate data centers are located outside the greater Seoul area due to factors such as energy regulations and limited power grids, Hyosung located this facility in the city center based on its own know-how in power supply. Placing the data center closer to demand hubs has the advantage of minimizing data transmission latency.

STT Seoul 1 is also the result of direct efforts by Hyosung Chairman Cho Hyun-joon (pictured). After forming a data center task force in 2017 and beginning to review data centers as a future business, Chairman Cho drew up a concrete blueprint following a meeting in 2019 with STT GDC CEO Bruno Lopez. The business then took shape in 2021 with the signing of a strategic partnership and the establishment of the joint venture.

Starting with STT Seoul 1, Hyosung plans to develop the AI data center business into a core business of the group. Chairman Cho urged executives and employees, saying, “Based on Hyosung’s technological prowess in power equipment, construction capabilities, and nearly 30 years of accumulated information technology (IT) operation experience, the data center business must be developed into a future growth pillar for the group.”
