In Jeju, artificial intelligence (AI) will start identifying risk factors on roads in real time.

Jeju Special Self-Governing Province announced on the 20th that it will launch the “AI-Based Integrated Road Control Platform Construction Project,” which utilizes AI and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies.

For this project, Jeju Province will invest a total of KRW 1,685 million, combining KRW 1,385 million in national funding secured through selection in a public contest organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety with KRW 300 million from the provincial budget.

Jeju Province will first install high-performance AI edge cameras on provincial and administrative city official vehicles to automatically detect potholes and road damage while driving and immediately notify the control center. Edge cameras analyze data directly within the camera itself without transmitting video to a central server.

The province also plans to establish an “AI·IoT Multimodal Road Risk Management System” by equipping snow removal vehicles and others with composite sensors such as high-precision Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) units, road surface temperature sensors, and LiDAR, in order to support ice risk prediction and tailored snow-removal operations.

Jeju Province plans to select a specialized project operator and, from next month through December, focus on advancing customized AI models and building the system. Upon completion, the province expects to move away from existing reliance on visual patrols or passive complaint reception and to establish a proactive and dynamic smart road management system.

An official from Jeju Province said, “The integrated road control platform is a core infrastructure that will dramatically improve traffic safety, which is directly linked to the lives of residents.”
