Daewoo Engineering & Construction (Daewoo E&C) announced on the 13th that it has established a “Data Center TFT” to secure competitiveness in the data center business and to enter overseas markets.

With demand for generative AI and cloud services surging, the global data center market is also showing a steep growth trajectory. Daewoo E&C has identified this as a future growth engine and formed a dedicated organization to systematically develop specialized personnel across all areas, including design, construction, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP).

The TFT will serve as a control tower overseeing the entire business beyond internal organizational alignment. It plans to establish market entry strategies for domestic and overseas markets, preemptively review risks at each business stage, and expand cooperative networks with specialized partner companies. Ultimately, the company aims to evolve from a constructor into a business operator that directly leads the entire process, from site acquisition, permits and approvals, and design to investment and operation.

Daewoo E&C has already laid meaningful groundwork in this field. In June last year, it completed the 40MW “Empyrean Digital AI Campus” in Gangnam, Seoul, and is currently participating as both an investor and constructor in the “Jangseong Pine Data Center,” the first data center in South Jeolla Province, with a capacity of 60MW. Overseas, it is reviewing entry into Southeast Asian markets, including Vietnam.

The largest project stems from a business agreement signed in January this year. In cooperation with Jangseong-gun, Gangjin-gun, and private institutions, the company is promoting a project to build ultra-large data centers with capacities of 200MW and 300MW in Jangseong and Gangjin in South Jeolla Province, respectively, with permitting procedures under way aiming to start construction in 2027. In this project, Daewoo E&C will act as a key partner responsible not only for construction but also for investment and development.

A Daewoo E&C official said, “Data centers are core infrastructure in the AI era that will drive both regional economies and national competitiveness,” adding, “Centered on the TFT, we will enhance our development capabilities and accelerate our efforts to pioneer overseas markets.”
