Anthropic’s artificial intelligence (AI) model “Claude” is rapidly gaining ground in the domestic generative AI app market. Claude, which ranked only within the top 10 based on new installations at the start of this year, entered the “top 3” last month, shaking up the landscape. By contrast, growth momentum for established leaders OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini appears to be slowing.
According to Mobile Index from data analytics company IGAWorks on the 12th, Claude recorded 365,073 new installations last month, placing it third in market share within the sector. Claude climbed seven places in just two months, rising from 10th (42,701 installations) in January to 5th (132,120 installations) in February. The number of installations increased about 8.5 times over three months, indicating steep growth.
Claude’s installation count has increased more than tenfold compared with March last year (28,365 installations). ChatGPT still ranks first in both new installations and user numbers for generative AI apps, but Claude entered the “top 5” for the first time with 602,276 monthly active users (MAU) in March, ranking fifth overall. Gemini ranked second with 420,349 new installations, but remained only within the top 10 in terms of user numbers, revealing limits to its expansion in influence.
Industry observers point to Claude’s recent surge being driven by its response architecture focused on accuracy and stability, as well as growing demand among developers and professionals. In particular, the rise in credibility following reports of adoption in U.S. federal government defense and public sectors is seen as having influenced the inflow of domestic Claude users.
Anthropic is also rapidly closing in on OpenAI in the enterprise AI market, with a potential “overtake” in sight. According to “AI Metrics” published by payment information startup Ramp on the 11th (local time), enterprise adoption of Anthropic’s AI tools reached 30.6% as of last month, up 6.3 percentage points in a single month. This marks a new record for the largest monthly increase.
As a result, Anthropic has significantly narrowed the enterprise adoption gap with OpenAI (35.2%), which has been moving sideways for nine months since July last year with repeated minor fluctuations, to 4.6 percentage points. Ara Karajyan, an economist at Ramp, said, “At this pace, Anthropic is on track to overtake OpenAI within two months.”
