Samsung Electronics has surpassed KRW 57 trillion in operating profit in a single quarter, achieving the highest quarterly performance in the history of South Korean corporations.

On the 7th, Samsung Electronics announced that its operating profit for the first quarter of this year was tentatively estimated at KRW 57.2 trillion. This represents an increase of 755.01% from the same period a year earlier.

During the same period, provisional sales amounted to KRW 133 trillion, up 68.06% year-on-year.

This far exceeds the previous record set in the fourth quarter of last year, when operating profit stood at KRW 20.1 trillion and sales at KRW 93.8 trillion.

In particular, first-quarter operating profit alone has already surpassed last year’s full-year operating profit of KRW 43.601 trillion. The industry had initially raised its forecast for Samsung Electronics’ operating profit to KRW 50 trillion, but the company announced results exceeding that figure, delivering an “earnings surprise.”

Although provisional results by business segment were not disclosed on the day, the company appears to have set a new all-time record on the back of strong performance in its memory semiconductor business. With the semiconductor “supercycle” (period of exceptionally strong demand) continuing, demand for memory used in artificial intelligence (AI) servers has surged, while memory semiconductor prices have risen sharply due to a semiconductor shortage.

From this year, Samsung Electronics has begun the world’s first mass production and supply of its sixth-generation high-bandwidth memory, HBM4, to Nvidia.
