The industry-government-research cooperation body for the artificial intelligence transformation (AX) of Geoje’s shipbuilding and offshore industry has been launched.

The Research Institute of Medium & Small Shipbuilding announced that, with the “Geoje Shipbuilding & Offshore M.AX Alliance Launching Ceremony” held on the 17th at the Sono Calm Geoje Grand Ballroom in Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province, the related cooperation framework will go into full operation.

The event was attended by about 100 participants, including Seo Yong-seok, President of the Research Institute of Medium & Small Shipbuilding; Byeon Gwang-yong, Mayor of Geoje; Shin Geum-ja, Chairperson of the Geoje City Council; provincial and city council members; and officials from Hanwha Ocean and Samsung Heavy Industries. National Assembly member Seo Il-joon sent a congratulatory message to mark the launch.

At the launching ceremony, the City of Geoje presented its plan for operating the alliance, and the Research Institute of Medium & Small Shipbuilding proposed a “Plan for Establishing a Shipbuilding & Offshore Production Process Innovation (AX) Technology Center.” This was followed by presentations from Hanwha Ocean and Samsung Heavy Industries on the creation of a shipbuilding and offshore AX ecosystem and related cooperation measures.

During the event, the City of Geoje, the Research Institute of Medium & Small Shipbuilding, Hanwha Ocean, and Samsung Heavy Industries signed a business agreement for the “Geoje Shipbuilding & Offshore M.AX Alliance for Sustainable Growth of Geoje’s Shipbuilding Industry.” Under the agreement, the four organizations plan to pursue cooperation aimed at building an industrial ecosystem, including AX technology innovation and dissemination, shared growth with partner companies, corporate support, and training of specialized personnel.

This cooperation is also linked to the “Shipbuilding & Offshore Production Process Innovation (AX) Support Infrastructure Construction Project (2026–2030, total scale KRW 25.0 billion),” promoted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. Through this, a plan will be implemented to develop Geoje into a demonstration and dissemination hub for realizing an AI-based autonomous manufacturing shipyard.

Seo Yong-seok, President of the Research Institute of Medium & Small Shipbuilding, stated, “The core task is to build a cooperation platform that connects demand at shipbuilding production sites with research and development and demonstration infrastructure,” adding, “We will strengthen the industrial base by linking the establishment of the technology center with corporate support and human resources development.”
