As global big tech firms and major countries stake everything on securing supremacy in artificial intelligence (AI)-driven science and technology, Korea has taken its first step in a pan-national project that brings together national capabilities. The initiative aims to transform research productivity through AI and seize leadership in future technologies.

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 11th that it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the “K-Moonshot Promotion Strategy” with domestic AI and infrastructure companies at The Plaza Hotel in Seoul. The goal is to double national research productivity by 2030 and resolve 12 key national challenges across 8 major areas, including advanced biotechnology and future energy, by 2035. A total of 161 companies have joined forces, laying out the first concrete implementation measures for the project.

The ministry will first establish a “K-Moonshot Corporate Partnership” centered on 88 AI and infrastructure companies specializing in AI models, computing, and data. Participating companies will engage in broad-based cooperation, including joint development of AI models and linkage of graphics processing unit (GPU) infrastructure, which is essential for large-scale computation. The government plans to support core research data and subsequent commercialization efforts.

Vice Minister of Science and ICT Baek Young-hoon stated, “Now, as AI is redesigning research methods themselves, is the golden time to concentrate national capabilities,” adding, “We will pursue the K-Moonshot toward an ‘AI Apollo era’ that leads future technologies, with a strong sense of mission.”
