Samsung Electronics announced on the 1st that it has applied a composite fiber material made from recycled waste glass generated during its display manufacturing process to washing machine parts, and has obtained an eco-friendly certification from global certification body UL Solutions.

The certified product is the all-in-one washer-dryer “Bespoke AI Combo.” The outer tub, a key component that surrounds the inner drum inside the washer (a plastic structure encasing the drum), contains 10% recycled glass fiber.

UL Solutions’ certification is a system that objectively verifies companies’ environmental claims by checking whether recycled materials are actually included in the product and whether hazardous substances comply with relevant standards. It is known for its rigorous procedure, which combines document assessments on manufacturing processes and material ratios with engineer reviews.

In cooperation with Samsung Display, Samsung Electronics collected and crushed waste glass generated during production, removed foreign substances, and then remelted it to produce recycled fiber with the same quality as conventional glass fiber. The resulting glass fiber is used in composite material form to manufacture the outer tub and is characterized by secured strength and heat resistance.

Starting with the domestic production line, Samsung Electronics plans to expand the application of recycled glass materials to its plants in North America and Vietnam within this year.

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics is increasing the use of recycled materials across its home appliance lineup. In September 2024, the company jointly developed enamel steel sheets used in microwave ovens and ovens in cooperation with POSCO, and is expanding the application to major product categories such as refrigerators and washing machines.

Moon Jong-seung, Executive Vice President of the Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics, said, “Samsung Electronics is continuing efforts to reduce environmental impact from the stage of home appliance production. The company will continue to develop various recycled material technologies and expand cooperation with external companies.”
