A commercial artificial intelligence (AI) data center with a total project cost of KRW 1 trillion will be built in Namyangju-si, Gyeonggi Province. On the 28th, Namyangju City announced that it will construct the ‘Namyangju Maseok X-AI Smart Energy Data Center’. The target completion date for the commercial data center, which is intended for external use rather than a company’s in-house network, is 2029.

On the same day, Namyangju City signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Namyangju Maseok IDC LLC at Yeo-yudang in City Hall. The city expects the project to generate approximately KRW 830 billion in added value and create employment for more than 6,200 people.

The data center will be developed on a site of more than 45,000 ㎡ in Dapnae-ri, Hwado-eup, with a total floor area of more than 37,000 ㎡. Its power consumption capacity will be 60 MW, of which about 10 MW will be allocated as a dedicated space to support AI startups using an ‘open AI demonstration and cooperation platform (OpenLAP)’ model. Namyangju City plans to establish this as a hub for industry–academia–research collaboration.

As a contribution to the local community, the project operator has proposed support for solar power generation facilities, as well as the creation of a sports park and community facilities. Namyangju City plans to continue additional consultations on the details. With this agreement, Namyangju will become home to the fourth large private data center following those of Kakao, Woori Financial Group, and Shinhan Financial Group. Namyangju Mayor Joo Gwang-deok said, “We will continue to provide support so that the AI data center can serve as a catalyst for creating youth employment and establishing the foundation for future industries.”
