Hyundai Motor Group’s autonomous driving subsidiary 42dot is recruiting more than 50 developers with 3 to 20 years of experience in the autonomous driving field. The company, which currently has around 500 developers, is hiring roughly one-tenth of its workforce at once. With recent completion of organizational reshuffling, including the appointment of a new head, the company appears intent on accelerating technology development.

On the 26th, 42dot stated that this recruitment is in line with Hyundai Motor Group’s existing autonomous driving development roadmap. It explained in particular that the hiring is aimed at advancing “Atria AI,” its proprietary end-to-end (E2E) autonomous driving technology. E2E is a method in which artificial intelligence (AI) learns entire driving datasets and handles decision-making and control in a single process.

The industry views this large-scale recruitment as an extension of the recent appointment of Park Min-woo, an autonomous driving expert from Nvidia, as both AVP Division Head (President) and CEO of 42dot. It is seen as a signal that Hyundai Motor Group has begun to accelerate its autonomous driving development to counter services such as Tesla’s supervised Full Self-Driving (FSD), which has recently entered the Korean market.

42dot, which will shape the future of Hyundai Motor Group’s autonomous driving, originally started as a startup. In 2019, Hyundai Motor invested KRW 2 billion in the startup founded by former Hyundai Motor President Song Chang-hyeon after he left Naver. Thereafter, Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung Euisun brought Song into the group in 2021, and the following year Hyundai Motor and Kia jointly invested KRW 430 billion to acquire a 93.2% stake in 42dot, making it a group subsidiary.
