Lotte Innovate is partnering with Kumho Tire to apply smart tire technology to autonomous vehicle pilot operations. Through mutual technological cooperation, the two companies aim to enhance the safety and efficiency of autonomous driving and strengthen competitiveness in the future mobility industry.

The two companies announced on the 20th that they had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on “technology improvement through autonomous vehicles and smart tire application verification” at Lotte Innovate’s headquarters.

The core of the agreement is the introduction of Kumho Tire’s smart tire technology in the operation of autonomous shuttles. Smart tires are a system that uses internal tire sensors to detect in real time the level of wear, air pressure, temperature, and other factors, enabling early identification and response to risk factors during driving. Lotte Innovate plans to reflect this data in autonomous driving control (the vehicle’s driving decision-making process) to enhance driving safety and improve prediction-based operational efficiency.

Lotte Innovate has been applying smart tires to a tourism-oriented autonomous shuttle service in Jeju since last year to accumulate data, and this year it is continuing operations in Jeju while expanding its data-based operating model. With this agreement as a starting point, the company plans to expand to a nationwide test-bed environment and systematically collect and analyze tire condition information and driving data.

Kumho Tire will supply smart tire systems for autonomous shuttles and enhance product reliability and technological completeness through analysis of pilot operation data. The two companies plan to pursue various forms of cooperation, including joint research, technology sharing, and promotion, to create synergies.

A Lotte Innovate representative stated, “Based on the data accumulated in the field, we will improve the stability and efficiency of autonomous driving services. Together with Kumho Tire, we will lead technological innovation in the future mobility industry.”
