“During this CES, U.S. big tech companies suggested that we should work together on ‘edge artificial intelligence (AI) devices’.”

In an interview with reporters on the 7th (local time) during CES 2026, the world’s largest electronics and information technology (IT) trade show, Lee Chung, President of Samsung Display (photo), named “edge AI” as the keyword that shows the future of displays. Edge AI refers to devices such as smartphones, automobiles, cameras, and robots performing AI computation directly on the device without going through the cloud.

He said, “In the era of edge AI, audio information alone will have its limits, so displays will become an essential element,” adding, “Any device without a display becomes extremely inconvenient.” He continued, “We have a vision to manufacture all the displays that go into edge devices.”

He noted that many stakeholders in the AI sector visited the Samsung Display exhibition space and said, “No one can know the exact form future devices will take, but we are prepared to respond to every possible form,” adding, “Customer companies were very positive about the various forms of future AI devices we proposed.” In fact, at this year’s CES exhibition hall, Samsung Display showcased products such as the “AI OLED Bot,” equipped with a 13.4‑inch organic light‑emitting diode (OLED), and the “AI OLED Pendant,” a necklace‑type device.

President Lee projected that once mass production of 8.6‑generation OLEDs for IT, scheduled to begin this year, is in full operation, related sales will grow by 20–30%. The 8.6‑generation line is a next‑generation technology with higher production efficiency, as the substrate size that can be processed in a single run is twice that of the current mainstream 6‑generation line.
