Samsung Electronics’ double-folding smartphone “Galaxy Z Trifold” (photo), which instantly sold out upon launch after explosive popularity, will be restocked on the morning of the 17th. The initial batch of the Trifold was completely sold out at online and offline stores on its launch date, the 12th.

According to the information technology (IT) industry on the 15th, Samsung Electronics will accept additional purchase applications for the Trifold on Samsung.com starting at 10:00 a.m. on the 17th. It has been reported that a limited quantity may also be supplied to offline stores.

As the Trifold is currently unavailable through official online and offline channels, it is being traded at a premium on second-hand platforms. The Trifold, which has a list price of KRW 3,590,400, is being resold at around KRW 4 million. Some sellers are offering the Trifold for as much as KRW 10 million.

On the 12th, when Samsung Electronics began selling the Trifold, “open-run” scenes unfolded in front of Samsung Electronics stores in Seoul’s Gangnam and Hongdae districts, with dozens of people lining up before opening time. Online, the product sold out within five minutes after sales began on Samsung.com.

Customers curious about the new form factor (the physical form of a mobile device) concentrated their demand on the Trifold. The Trifold connects three displays; in its folded state, it offers the same 6.5-inch (164.8 mm) size as the existing foldable phone “Galaxy Z Fold7,” but expands to 10 inches (253 mm) when unfolded.

Despite this strong consumer enthusiasm, industry observers consider it unlikely that Samsung Electronics will significantly increase Trifold production volume. An IT industry official said, “The Trifold is a product intended to showcase technological capability, and there is almost no profit even when it sells.” With recent sharp increases in the prices of smartphone components such as DRAM and application processors (APs), the Trifold is reported to have been priced with a very low profit margin.
