LG Electronics will establish an industry-academia research center with Seoul National University to study artificial intelligence (AI) security technologies. LG Electronics announced on the 14th that it had recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the establishment of a “Secured AI Research Center” at Seoul National University in Gwanak-gu, Seoul, with the attendance of LG Electronics Chief Technology Officer (CTO, Executive Vice President) Kim Byoung-hoon and Seoul National University Vice President for Research Kim Joo-han, among others.

The newly established research center will conduct research on security enhancement technologies for large language model (LLM) agents such as ChatGPT and on technologies to prevent data leakage. In particular, it plans to establish a “machine learning-specialized security operations” model that applies a security framework throughout the entire process of software development and operation. Although LLM agents are being widely used in daily life, issues such as hallucination effects that generate false information and attempts at external data exfiltration continue. An LG Electronics representative said, “With existing security approaches, it is difficult to respond comprehensively to these issues.”

The first director of the center will be Professor Hong Yong-taek of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Seoul National University. From LG Electronics, Lim Hyo-joon, head of the Next Generation Computing Lab, will review and coordinate the research projects. CTO Kim said, “As AI technologies are utilized across various areas such as home appliances and mobility, security and safety are essential,” adding, “By advancing next-generation security technologies, we will provide safer and more reliable products and services.”
