The world's largest semiconductor design (fabless) company, ARM, will train 1,400 semiconductor design specialists in Gwangju over the next five years.

The city of Gwangju announced on the 7th that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the global semiconductor design company ARM to establish an ARM School, a training institution for semiconductor design specialists, next year. This follows the meeting between President Lee Jae-myung and SoftBank Chairman Son Masayoshi.

According to the city, the government plans to swiftly designate a semiconductor-specialized graduate school along with the establishment of the ARM School, with Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) being the primary candidate. If the ARM School is established at GIST, it will train 1,400 specialists in semiconductor design over the next five years. ARM, headquartered in the UK, is a mobile semiconductor design company operating on a license and royalty basis without its own manufacturing, and was acquired by Japan's SoftBank Group in 2016.

Along with the establishment of the ARM School, Gwangju City is also promoting the reorganization of the Gwangju AI Academy to focus on advanced and intensive courses and the establishment of an AI Gifted High School. Additionally, the city is strengthening AI and semiconductor talent development through initiatives such as the establishment of a national NPU dedicated computing center and AI semiconductor demonstration support projects. Gwangju Mayor Kang Gi-jung stated, “The establishment of the ARM School signifies that Gwangju is emerging as a hub for advanced industry policies, including AI and system semiconductors.”
