As Google's recently launched AI 'Gemini 3' is evaluated to surpass ChatGPT, OpenAI has issued a 'Code Red'. CEO Altman has decided to suspend new businesses entirely and focus all efforts on strengthening the basics such as speed and personalization of ChatGPT. Newsis
As Google's artificial intelligence (AI) model 'Gemini 3' is rapidly advancing with unprecedented performance, OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, has issued 'Code Red', the highest emergency level within the company, to improve quality. Consequently, OpenAI has decided to postpone some ongoing new business ventures and concentrate all efforts on 'strengthening the basics'.
According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on the 2nd (local time), Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, recently sent a memo to employees stating, "ChatGPT is at a very critical juncture," and requested a focus on enhancing the basic performance of AI.
'Code Red' is the highest level of alert system issued by Silicon Valley companies, such as Google, when facing a severe crisis that threatens the company's survival. This is the opposite situation from three years ago when Google issued a Code Red upon the initial emergence of ChatGPT.
CEO Altman first demanded a focus on improving the 'everyday user experience' of ChatGPT. He prioritized the enhancement of 'personalization' features that read the context of conversations and user preferences, in addition to providing fast and stable responses.
As a result, other ambitious projects that OpenAI was pursuing have been put on hold. Some new business ventures aimed at revenue generation, such as the introduction of advertising, AI agents for health and shopping management, and the personal assistant 'Pulse', have been delayed.

Google's Gemini 3, launched last month, is evaluated to have surpassed ChatGPT in major performance assessments. The monthly active users (MAU) of Google Gemini surged from 450 million in July to 650 million in October. Although still fewer than ChatGPT's 800 million, the growth rate is very steep.
There is a tendency among Silicon Valley's prominent figures to side with Google. Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff praised, "Having used ChatGPT daily for the past three years, after trying Gemini 3, I decided never to go back," and described Google's leap as "insane".
On the same day, Nick Thiry, head of ChatGPT, stated, "Today, ChatGPT is the world's number one AI assistant, accounting for 70% of total usage," adding, "A new AI emerges every week, which is a great thing. It stimulates us to enhance the capabilities of AI assistants more rapidly."
