PureBio, a bio-raw material development company based in Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province, a hub city for green bio, announced on the 4th that it has completed registration in Korea of a cancer-related technology patent using a fermented extract of Stewartia koreana, a native plant species.

The newly registered patent covers a “composition for preventing or treating cancer comprising a fermented extract of Stewartia koreana as an active ingredient.” In the course of studying Stewartia koreana, which grows wild in forests in the southern region of Korea, PureBio identified key constituents such as ampelopsin and taxifolin, and is currently proceeding with international patent (PCT) and U.S. patent applications to secure overseas rights.

In addition, PureBio has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Quantum Business Group of Yonsei University (headed by Jeong Jae-ho) for “joint research on bio-materials based on quantum computing.” The two parties plan to use quantum computing technology to analyze interactions between Stewartia koreana-derived components and disease targets, and to assess the efficiency of natural product-based research.

Park Si-hyang, CEO of PureBio, stated, “This patent registration serves as an opportunity to confirm the potential for utilizing domestic biological resources,” adding, “PureBio will continue to conduct fundamental research and advance technology based on native plants, and steadily strengthen competitiveness in the natural product bio sector.”
