Hyosung Heavy Industries will establish the first ultra-high-voltage circuit breaker production base in the United States among Korean power equipment manufacturers.

On the 14th, Hyosung Heavy Industries announced that its subsidiary Hyosung HICO has signed an agreement to establish a gas circuit breaker (GCB) joint venture, “Hyosung HICO Breaker,” with a subsidiary of Quanta, a North American energy infrastructure solutions company. The joint venture, to be established in July, will begin production in October of ultra-high-voltage circuit breakers ranging from 72.5kV (kilovolts) to 800kV at Quanta’s Canonsburg plant in Pennsylvania, United States. Specific investment details, including equity stakes, are undisclosed. Having set up a transformer plant in the United States in 2020, Hyosung Heavy Industries will thus become the first Korean power equipment company to secure production capacity for both transformers and circuit breakers in the U.S. market.

This joint venture is an investment aimed at responding to growing demand for power equipment driven by the expansion of data centers powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and the modernization of aging power grids. According to Global Market Insights (GMI), a global market research firm, the North American circuit breaker market is projected to grow from USD 4.8 billion (about KRW 7.3 trillion) in 2024 to USD 9.6 billion (about KRW 14.6 trillion) by 2034.

Cho Hyun-joon, Chairman of Hyosung, said, “The two companies have already built cooperation ranging from the supply of circuit breakers and substation facilities to transmission and renewable energy interconnection projects,” adding, “As the advancement of power infrastructure is the most essential task amid the explosive growth of the AI industry, we will strengthen our efforts to penetrate the U.S. power market.”
