Jeon Young-hyun, Vice Chairman and Head of Samsung Electronics’ Device Solutions (DS) Division, said on the 8th that he held a meeting with NVIDIA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jensen Huang and discussed cooperation plans including supply of next-generation High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) products HBM4E (7th generation) and HBM5 (8th generation).

After holding a one-on-one meeting with CEO Huang at the Shilla Hotel in Jung-gu, Seoul on the 8th, Vice Chairman Jeon told reporters, “We discussed many topics regarding long-term cooperation plans for HBM4E, the foundry business, and HBM5,” adding, “We exchanged constructive views and overall it was a very satisfactory meeting.” On this day, CEO Huang and Vice Chairman Jeon held their meeting in conjunction with attending a roundtable between NVIDIA and the Korean artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics startup ecosystem. Regarding the meeting, CEO Huang said, “(NVIDIA and Samsung) have cooperated for a long time, and today was one of the best conversations we have had.”

CEO Huang and Vice Chairman Jeon also discussed cooperation plans for HBM4 (6th generation), for which Samsung Electronics has become the world’s first to successfully begin mass production and supply. Vice Chairman Jeon said, “In the short term, what is important is to stably supply HBM4 and the memory module SOCAMM2 this year,” and added, “In the mid to long term, we also exchanged views on various cooperation options including joint development.”

Discussions were also held on foundry (semiconductor contract manufacturing) cooperation between NVIDIA and Samsung Electronics. Vice Chairman Jeon said, “We also talked about the foundry business,” and added, “(Samsung Electronics) is supplying (NVIDIA’s) autonomous driving chips using the 4nm (nanometer; 1 nanometer is one-billionth of a meter) and 8nm process nodes.” He continued, “We are also cooperating on production of the Groq3 Language Processing Unit (LPU). We are jointly discussing cooperation on the next-generation chips as well.”

Regarding CEO Huang’s comment earlier in the day about SK hynix, a competitor of Samsung Electronics, that “In the past, they were our largest memory partner and they will remain our largest partner in the future without change,” Vice Chairman Jeon expressed confidence, saying, “We will show the results later.” When asked whether Samsung Electronics has signed a two-year long-term memory supply contract with NVIDIA, he replied, “We will do our utmost so that (Samsung Electronics), as the best partner, can help NVIDIA succeed.”
