POSCO Holdings announced that Chairman Jang In-hwa attended the regular meeting of the World Steel Association (worldsteel) held in Berlin, Germany, on the 13th (local time), where he stressed the need for global cooperation to achieve decarbonization in the steel industry.

Chairman Jang attended the Executive Committee meeting of the World Steel Association as a representative of the Korean steel industry. Chief executive officers (CEOs) of major global steelmakers, including China’s Baowu Steel, Nippon Steel of Japan, and JSW of India, were reported to have participated in the meeting to discuss key issues such as responses to the energy crisis, geopolitical risks, and international standardization of carbon emissions measurement methods.

At the meeting, Chairman Jang emphasized that, despite uncertainties in the industrial environment, including slowing demand and rising energy costs, the decarbonization transition is a challenge that the steel industry must address jointly, and he shared POSCO’s decarbonization roadmap.

Chairman Jang said, “For the global steel industry to achieve a successful decarbonization transition and for low-carbon steel products to be recognized for their fair value in the market, close cooperation across the global steel sector is essential.”

He then met with Sajjan Jindal, Chairman of India’s JSW Group, and Liu Jian, Director of China’s Hagang Group, among others, where they were reported to have exchanged views on key issues such as overseas steel investment, carbon reduction technologies, and supply chain stabilization, and explored possible areas of cooperation.

There were also tangible results. At the members’ meeting held on the 14th, the following day, Chairman Jang received, on behalf of POSCO, a plaque recognizing the company’s selection as a “Sustainability Champion.” This certification is awarded by the World Steel Association to companies that lead sustainable development in the steel industry, and POSCO has been selected for five consecutive years since 2022.

Meanwhile, the World Steel Association is a global organization with 157 member companies and institutions, including steelmakers, regional associations, and research institutes worldwide.
