Hanwha has been selected as the final contractor for the Norwegian Army’s Long Range Precision Fire System (LRPFS) project. The total project value is estimated at about KRW 2.8 trillion, of which Hanwha is reported to have won a contract worth around KRW 1 trillion.

Norway’s Ministry of Defence announced on the 29th (local time) that it had selected Hanwha Aerospace as the final contractor for the LRPFS project. The Norwegian parliament had earlier, on the 27th, passed the bill approving the LRPFS procurement project in a plenary session. Hanwha Aerospace is to supply the Chunmoo multiple launch rocket system to Norway following the signing of the contract on the 30th.

During the selection process, Hanwha competed against the HIMARS system from US company Lockheed Martin and the “Euro Puls” system from KNDS, a German-French joint venture. Initially, public opinion suggested that KNDS had a higher likelihood of winning the contract, but the prospects for Hanwha reportedly improved after Kang Hoon-sik, Presidential Chief of Staff, visited Norway last October as a special envoy for strategic economic cooperation and conveyed various cooperation commitments.

The total project value is around KRW 2.8 trillion. However, approximately KRW 1 trillion will be used for the purchase of Chunmoo, while the remainder is expected to be allocated to strengthening the Norwegian military’s capabilities and related unit maintenance projects. An official in the defense industry stated, “This export will serve as an opportunity to further solidify the status of Korean defense technology in the global defense market as it makes inroads into Northern Europe.”
