Samsung Medical Center’s Proton Therapy Center announced on the 17th that it will hold an international symposium on the 20th at the auditorium on the first basement floor of the Cancer Hospital at Samsung Medical Center in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, to mark the 10th anniversary of its opening. The event will serve as an opportunity to share and review its successful clinical experience over the past decade. The symposium will also feature in-depth discussions on research trends in integrated immunotherapy, including “FLASH,” a next-generation particle therapy innovation technology, and “CAR-T cell therapy.”

Samsung Medical Center was the first private hospital in Korea to introduce a proton therapy device in 2015. It has achieved particularly notable outcomes in liver cancer treatment. Last year, nine years after introduction, it became the first in Korea to surpass 2,000 liver cancer proton therapy sessions.


Recently, the center has been focusing on research into FLASH, an ultra-fast, high-dose radiotherapy method. FLASH is a treatment technique that delivers a concentrated dose of more than 40 gray per second (Gy/s) in less than one second. This technology can maximize protection of normal tissues by minimizing radiation exposure time while maintaining the ability to effectively target cancer cells.

Park Hee-cheol, head of the Proton Therapy Center, stated, “The 10-year history of proton therapy at Samsung Medical Center is the result of actively validating treatment efficacy through research and multidisciplinary teamwork dedicated to finding optimal therapies,” adding, “Through the development of FLASH technology and immuno-oncology therapies to be discussed at this symposium, we will pursue new pathways that offer cancer patients hope for a cure.”
