Seoul St. Mary's Hospital is set to establish the largest proton therapy center in the country. The plan is to introduce and operate Asia's most advanced proton therapy system as early as 2029.
Proton therapy is a treatment method that accelerates protons, which are subatomic particles constituting the nucleus of a hydrogen atom, to destroy cancerous tissues through the resulting beam. It is called the 'dream therapy device' due to the minimal side effects compared to conventional radiation therapy.
On the 24th, Seoul St. Mary's Hospital announced on the 25th that it had signed a formal contract with IBA, a global leader in the proton particle therapy field, to introduce the world's most advanced proton therapy system, 'IBA Proteus Plus.'
Considering that the proton therapy devices currently in operation in the country were introduced around a decade ago, the equipment Seoul St. Mary's Hospital is acquiring represents a significant technological leap, according to the hospital. A representative from Seoul St. Mary's Hospital stated, "We will operate the largest proton center in the country by introducing the most up-to-date equipment among existing proton devices in Asia."
The device being introduced by Seoul St. Mary's Hospital allows for immediate treatment of altered tumors during the treatment period through Adaptive Proton Therapy, without additional waiting time.
The Dynamic ARC function is also used by only a handful of medical institutions worldwide. No medical institution in Asia has yet adopted this technology. This technology allows for precise angle adjustments at 0.1-degree increments, enabling continuous irradiation of the proton beam at the optimal treatment angle. It minimizes damage to normal tissues, enhances treatment effectiveness, and reduces treatment time.

The proton center will be constructed within Seoul St. Mary's Hospital, spanning seven underground floors and one above ground. The goal is to complete the installation and commence operation of the proton therapy device by the end of 2029. Lee Ji-yeol, the director of Seoul St. Mary's Hospital, stated, "In addition to our world-renowned hematology hospital, our cancer hospital will also provide world-class treatment."
