Jeju Development Corporation announced that the '15th Jeju Water World Forum' was held at the Jeju Haevichi Hotel & Resort from the 30th to the 1st. This year's forum was conducted under the theme 'Jeju's Water, Enriching Future Generations'.
On the first day, lectures and sessions were held to highlight the history and cultural value of Jeju's water and to explore sustainable water management strategies. On the second day, discussions focused intensively on maximizing the industrial value of water and utilizing branding strategies. Hee-Won Jeong, the health director of Seoul Metropolitan Government, who gained attention for research on slow-aging diets, conducted a talk concert on the theme 'A Cup of Water, the Start of Health'. The accompanying events, including exhibitions on the past, present, and future of Jeju's water, a water sommelier experience, and eco-friendly programs, received positive responses from participants.
Jeju Island has a unique water resource structure, with 43.5% of its total water resources supplied by groundwater. It is globally recognized for its purity and industrial value.
In fact, Jeju Development Corporation, which produces Jeju Samdasoo, has been purchasing land equivalent to 100 football fields (approximately 710,000㎡) around the water source since 1996 to create a water quality protection zone. It operates 113 water resource monitoring networks in the intake and mid-lower stream areas to continuously manage groundwater levels and quality.
Recently, an advanced groundwater management system utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) has been introduced, establishing a cutting-edge scientific groundwater management system. It operates a system (i-SGMS) that integrates groundwater observation data and predicts groundwater levels on a 1-3 month basis using self-developed deep learning and neural network models. This data is used for proactive management, such as adjusting intake volumes.
Baek Kyung-hoon, president of Jeju Development Corporation, stated, "Water is a resource for the current generation and a precious heritage to be passed on to future generations," adding, "By advancing AI-based groundwater management technology, we will establish a scientific and proactive water resource conservation system to sustainably protect the pure groundwater of Jeju."
