South Korean Government and Companies Reveal Detailed U.S. Investment Plans

The White House announced that during the summit between President Lee Jae-myung and U.S. President Donald Trump, "Korean companies have decided to invest tens of billions of dollars in the United States," and disclosed specific investment details.
In a fact sheet released on the 29th (local time), the White House stated, "Korean Air will purchase 103 Boeing aircraft worth $36.2 billion, supporting 135,000 jobs," and "plans to purchase GE Aerospace engines in a separate deal worth $13.7 billion." Previously, Korean Air had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with each company in August this year regarding the purchase.
The White House also reported that the Korean Air Force selected L3 Technologies as a partner for the second phase of the $2.3 billion airborne control project, and POSCO International agreed to cooperate with ReElement Technologies to establish a rare earth and permanent magnet production complex in the United States.
Regarding the core cooperation project between Korea and the U.S. in the shipbuilding industry, HD Hyundai, along with Cerberus Capital Management, decided to proceed with a $5 billion investment project related to reviving the domestic shipbuilding industry, strengthening supply chains, and autonomous navigation. Samsung Heavy Industries also decided to proceed with projects related to the construction of U.S.-flagged ships, including naval vessel maintenance and repair (MRO).

Hanwha Ocean plans to expand the production capacity of the Philadelphia Shipyard by tenfold with a $5 billion infrastructure expansion plan. The Philadelphia Shipyard is a U.S. shipyard acquired by Hanwha Ocean in June last year.
Energy sector projects between Korea and the U.S. are also being pursued. Korea Gas Corporation will purchase 3.3 million tons of U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually, and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power and POSCO International agreed to cooperate with Centrus Energy to support the expansion of uranium enrichment production capacity in Piketon, Ohio. LS Cable & System plans to invest $3 billion in the U.S. power grid infrastructure by 2030.
The White House emphasized, "President Trump's state visit to Korea reaffirmed the strong alliance between Korea and the U.S. while enhancing U.S. economic interests, bringing tangible benefits to the American people," and "this announcement is the result of securing historic trade victories and infrastructure commitments during President Trump's stays in Japan and Malaysia, bringing billions of dollars in investment and thousands of jobs to the United States."
